A Happy English Life of an Overseas Chinese
by
Aggie &Gary Hynson Translated

Go
to study in US because of Excellent English
The
personal stories of Mr. Peng Zhong are like a TV series with peaks and valleys.
He moved to Chongqing from Beijing because of the transfer of his father’s
work, when he was 13. In 1963, he was accepted by Tianjin University, majoring
in Electric Power Engineering. In 1978, he studied in the Institute of High
Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
His
strong interest in English urged him to have English classes as an auditor, even
though Peng Zhong studied Russian in high school and college. As a graduate
student in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he like his peers would always asked
the
foreign visiting professors many questions. At that time, he liked visiting
Beijing Friendship Hotel by bicycle because his foreign teachers stayed there
and he wanted to chat with them in English. Now speaking of that period, he said
that he had cherished a hope that one day he would further his study in America
with full scholarship.
God
helps those who help themselves. A visiting professor from Purdue University had
a deep impression on Peng Zhong and agreed to help him study in America with
full scholarship, which stirred his mind for quite a long time. As some others
were better than him in his field, his outstanding English opened a new window
for him. At the age of 34, his dream of studying aboard came true.
Come
Back Because of Cultural Differences
He
felt unreal when he landed on the land of America which was a brand new Western
country with sharp differences in culture and materials. After more than
four-year study of master’s and doctoral degrees there, he was employed by the
Power Dispatch Center of Pacific Gas & Electric, San Francisco, USA. He got
his green card on June 16, 1989. Many people believed getting a green card mean
the realization of the American dream but that was not for Peng. What he held
was that change of fate was his personal American dream.
Watching
from the rooftop revolving restaurant of Embarcadero Center, he felt a sudden
emptiness popping into his mind and he could not see his future. Nostalgia
became more acute and he saw his end in America because being 43, he was just a
vanilla engineer. A glass ceiling stood in his way up.
The
longer he worked in the US, the sharper he felt the differences in culture and
management between China and America, and the lonelier he felt. To achieve
something in America, one must assimilate himself into the society which is the
exact difficulty for Peng. He seldom had some shared topics with his American
colleagues. Yes, he was 34 when he first came to America. At that time his value
was deeply affected by the Chinese culture. The cultural differences finally
made him back to China, although he was the senior engineer in the Public
Service Commission of Nevada state government.
Creat
English Corners and Live a Happy Retirement Life
Back
in China, Peng Zhong worked in an American company in Fujian Province. After his
retirement, he came back to Chongqing to enjoy his retirement life. But he was
not quite ready for that. So he went to teach computer courses in English for a
Singapore school which organized an English corner at weekend. Four months later
the school shut down, but he managed to keep the English corner running. Every
week he organizes the English corners at Jiefangbei and Shapingba respectively,
862 sessions so far have been held for the past 9 years. In addition, Peng has
sponsored more than 40 English parties with his pension such as Christmas
parties and oral English competitions. Through the coverage by many media such
as CQTV-1, Chongqing Morning Daily, etc., Chongqing Happy English Corners got
its name, attracting more and more people from high school students to a
78-year-old man and from locals to foreigners.
April of the next year will mark the 10th anniversary of Chongqing Happy English Corners, which is the brainchild of Peng. Watching so many people growing up and improving themselves at the Corners, he feels a great sense of achievement that never happened to him in America. Peng said he loves here and will live here for the rest of his life. People here are straightforward and warm-hearted, and the city itself is undergoing profound changes, he said with a smile. Chongqing Happy English Corners will go on, making all the participants including himself happy forever.
